Apple, AT&T Unveil Monthly iPhone Plans (Updated)

AT&T Inc. and Apple Inc. on Tuesday said wireless service for the iPhone will range from $59.99 per month to $99.99 per month. The $59.99 monthly plan includes 450 minutes of voice time; a $79.99 plan includes 900 minutes; and a $99.99 plan includes 1,350 minutes. All three offer 200 text messages, unlimited data services, minutes that roll over month-to-month and mobile-to-mobile calls. There also is a $36 activation fee.

This may be strike three for me. My current Cingular/AT&T plan which is priced at $39.99 plus $7.99 for their connectivity plan (texts and 5megs of data transfer for MMS messages and “internet” surfing), ends up costing me over $65 each month when taxes and fees are added, and I have 1,000 texts and over 900 minutes each month. Why is it going to cost more for the same amount of minutes just so I can use the iPhone? I fail to see why this is logical or fair. I think I may just skip over the purchase and let the iPhone go the way of the Newton.

(Update) Engadget has post a great table of numbers comparing the overall cost of the iPhone versus other smart devices.

Decisions decisions. I want a phone that is very user friendly, as I have adhd and am very very technically challenged. While I don’t need a phone for music, video, games, slicing and dicing, or pictures, and I don’t talk a lot, I am addicted to surfing the web and email. I want to be able to go online while I might be waiting in one. I also have a limited income. Is there any other phone/service out there that comes close to this new toy? OR, will something similar come out a year from now?

Go ahead and comment. I won't make fun of you too much.
