Search Prediction

As I predicted here, a gentle internet user was actually searching for “the Arden Forest and the Battle of the Bulge” and found my ridiculous blog.

Sorry man.

Okay, so this scares me. (It scared me when I read the original post, too, but I got so busy I forgot to worry about it.) What else do you know about your readers? And, uh … what can you find out about mine . . .

I have a rather fantastic system installed on my server that tracks users who visit my site via JavaScript which then posts all that information to a MySQL database on my server that I can view to retrieve that information. And as for what I know about my readers I pay attention to their browser, screen size, platform, and geographical location. I also watch what search terms are used that drive traffic to my site as well as what websites are linking to me. The rest of the information I get, I let slide.

There are several free versions of this type of thing that you can put onto your blog. I would suggest Reinvigorate or Sitemeter. Reinvigorate is much, much better but is in Beta right now so it might take a while to get an account. Let me know if you want to use it and I might be able to get you hooked up.

That would be fun, but it seems like a kind of Pandora’s box of potential time-wastage. Hmmm … (sorry I’m still using IE! I did visit once on Firefox! Really I did!!!) Maybe I will just ask you my specific hacking-related questions in person.

Go ahead and comment. I won't make fun of you too much.
