Men of the 16th Infantry Regiment seek shelter from German machine-gun fire, Easy Red sector, Omaha Beach.

Normandy, France.

I can’t even begin to imagine what it would have been like to be a young boy storming that beach. Thankfully, men greater than myself thought it a worthwhile pursuit to undertake. Every single one of the Allied soldiers who landed and fought, is my hero.

I’m not going to try and write some amazing blog post about it, I just want people to remember. Go find a book about it, rent Band of Brothers, watch a movie, do something.

You will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped, and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely….The free men of the world are marching together to victory. I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory. Good luck, and let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower

ever since being a history teacher i find myself not only in awe of these heros, but so interested in each story i read about them. why is it that most students do not appreciate history until they reach adulthood and some semblance of maturity?

Go ahead and comment. I won't make fun of you too much.
